Is the Louis Vuitton Alma a good investment?

My notes: Is the alma a good investment?

A little background. Louis Vuitton Alma bag is one of the oldest of the b can be date back to a custom made bag for the one and only Coco Chanel in 1925. It was first named the Squire, then it was called the Champs-Elysees and finally it was given the name Alma after the Place d’alma a tree lined square in Paris. I believe the more modern structure we see today has been around for the last 20 years or so.

Currently in these sizes:

NANO - BB - PM - MM there is also a mini - which is quite a different style to the others. No longer see the GM on the website - might be able to get in second hand stores!

My notes for the video: Is the alma a good investment?

The finishes it comes in: Monogram canvas monogram / damier / Epi leather / electric / ebelishments and vernis

Maybe the biggest rumour we found circulating on our forum is the eventual total disappearance of LV's monogram patent, Monogram Vernis.

Prices over the years compared to the stock market?

2003 - client bought MM £450

2005 for mono PM £600

PM monogram now £1070

71% increase for the FTSE

137% increase for the alma between 2004- 2017

Is it a good investment? Depends on how you define investment.

1. Not an investment to make money in the same way - but it is an investment in so much as it will not decrease in value - i.e. become unfashionable and unwanted. It will retain its value. Modernised - the vintage ones are selling for more than was paid for them but not by 137% more.

2. If you are buying purely to make money would suggest that if it is in pristine, bought second hand in mint condition you might make a couple of hundred pounds over say 5 years or so.

3. Limited editions can play for and against you. The Marc Jacobs graffiti era has suddenly become sought after among some of my clients - in the speedy or the neverfull but not really the alma. Same with the Neverfull Hawaii but it is a risk.

4. If you’re buying it to use - I think it is a good investment. You won't make back more than you buy it for but you might be able to sell it to as near as you can what you paid if you buy one-second hand and look after it well.

Consider the finish you want to get it in - if it is an investment. Think timeless, classic and hardwearing. Classic canvas could be a good option. You want to pick something that will be continued. Size - cute - need to be practical too. GM discontinued - perhaps don’t opt for the smallest. Rely on Louis to keep increasing prices. 2% increase in February 2018. Not a massive amount.
