ROYAL ASCOT 2017: Womenβs dress code & style guide. Watch the video or read our blog below.
Being a stoneβs throw from the magnificent racecourse means that we have the pleasure of dressing many an attendee during Royal Ascot week and have also seen first hand people being turned away for inappropriate attire. Timpanys makes it our absolute priority to understand the dress code in order to advise you on what is and is not acceptable to wear. Read our tips at the top and then the fashion rules for each enclosure to ensure youβre appropriately dressed for the day.
RULE 1:
Ascot is about the hat. Start with that and work the rest of the outfit around it. We have some exquisite couture milliners stocked in store for a fraction of their original cost β which means that you will be the only one with that piece on the day. Shop hats.
RULE 2:
Comfort: this is for shoes and hats. Make sure your hat is secured properly and that you will be able to wear it all day β there is nothing more annoying than wearing something that feels like it is going to fall off all day. Wear comfortable heels and bring a pair of flats to change into if you donβt do well with high shoes all day. Shop shoes.
RULE 3: Donβt forget to plan for the weather β match your sunglasses or umbrella to your outfit for complete race day chic.
RULE 4:
Plan your outfit ahead of time and stick to the dress code. It is important you know which enclosure youβre in and the rules that apply. People do get turned away. See below for the dress code for each enclosure. Shop dresses.
In order of strictness they are:
THE ROYAL ENCLOSURE DRESS CODE
Dresses & Tops: must be on or below the knee. Tops and dresses must have at least an inch strap. You CANNOT just wear a pashmina over a strappy top β the top must comply. No halter necks or midriffs.
Trousers suits & jumpsuits: for the first time in 2017 the jumpsuit has been allowed. They must be full length and the tops must comply with the above rule. Trousers suits must be matching in colour.
Hats: the base of the hat must be at least 10cm and fascinators are not permitted. Watch our video to see how to measure your hat correctly.
QUEEN ANNE ENCLOSURE & VILLAGE ENCLOSURE DRESS CODE
Personally if I go to Royal Ascot- no matter which enclosure I would be in I would always dress for the Royal. However the other enclosures have a slightly less formal code as follows:
Dresses & Tops: slightly less strict however strapless are not permitted and midriffs must not be seen. Sheer straps are not allowed. I personally would still like to opt for a knee length dress however this is not specified.
Trousers suits & jumpsuits: again these are permitted as long as the top parts adhere to the above rule. They must be full length and the trouser suit must be a matching pair. Shorts are not permitted.
Hats: the guidelines to these enclosures are less formal. You must wear a hat or fascinator but there is not specification on size.
WINDSOR ENCLOUSURE DRESS CODE
There is no specific dress code for the Windsor enclosure β but along with each of the other enclosures it is essentially an opportunity to really push the style boat out with an exquisite hat and elegant outfit. Do not use the opportunity of no dress code to dress in an inappropriate manor.
